Digital Transformation in University Libraries: Service Quality and Challenges in the Modern Educational Environment

Abstract

This study aims to identify the digital transformation in the university libraries in Libya in terms of the quality of the services provided and the challenges faced in the modern educational environment. The study seeks to measure the satisfaction of the digital services' users provided by university libraries compared with traditional services. It also offers a set of recommendations for developing digital transformation services in university libraries in alignment with modern educational requirements. A theoretical approach was employed to explore key concepts and theoretical models related to digital transformation in university libraries. This was through an analysis of the previous literature and related studies, providing a theoretical framework for understanding how digital transformation influences the quality and efficiency of library services. The results show that digital transformation has a significant positive effect on the development of university libraries' services, as it enhances the efficiency of operations and improves the quality of the services provided to the users. This was through automating procedures and providing round-the-clock access to electronic information resources, enabling libraries to better support the educational process and scientific research, especially considering the challenges imposed by digital transformation and the expansion of online learning. The results reveal that technical infrastructure, a lack of trained staff, resistance to change within the organizational structure, and intellectual property rights are the most important challenges related to the adoption of digital transformation practices. Such barriers require continuous training schemes to succeed in the digital transformation process. Consequently, digital transformation can be considered as a key element for the university libraries' development to enhance their roles in supporting education and research. This needs a careful plan and more investment in both technological and intellectual skills to overcome barriers and achieve the desired aims.
