Abstract

Helicobacter pylori is a globally prevalent pathogen associated with various gastrointestinal diseases, including gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric malignancies. Host factors such as ABO blood group antigens have been proposed to influence susceptibility to infection. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate anti-H. pylori antibodies for detecting H. pylori infection and to assess the correlation between infection incidence and ABO blood groups. Materials and methods:  A total of 95 patients from Tripoli presenting with dyspeptic symptoms were enrolled. Stool and serum samples were collected to detect H. pylori infection using standard immunoassays. Blood grouping was performed by conventional agglutination techniques. Statistical analysis was conducted to explore associations between H. pylori seropositivity, blood groups, age, and gender Results: Among the studied subjects, 41.5% were seropositive for H. pylori. The distribution of blood groups among infected patients revealed that blood group O (49.0%) was the most frequent, followed by group A (31%), group B (11%), and group AB (11 %). Although a higher prevalence of infection was observed among group O individuals, the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The findings suggest a possible trend toward increased H. pylori infection among individuals with blood group O. However, the absence of a statistically significant association indicates that additional host and environmental factors may influence susceptibility.
